Hands-On Learning | Tool Safety | Real Woodworking Projects

Our Woodshop classes provide a safe and engaging environment where teens can learn essential woodworking skills, tool safety, and problem-solving through hands-on projects. Each session focuses on a single project, allowing students to develop confidence and craftsmanship while learning practical woodworking techniques.

What Students Will Learn

Safety Skills

  • Proper handling of hand and power tools, including table saw, compound miter saw, jointer, planer, and sanders

  • Importance of protective gear such as safety glasses and ear protection

  • Safe workspace practices, including organization and cleanup

Basic Hand & Power Tool Use

  • Proper use of sanding tools

  • Selecting the right screwdriver size and type

  • Measuring accurately with rulers, squares, and tape measures

  • Practicing safe and effective sawing techniques

Wood Knowledge

  • Understanding different types of wood and their characteristics

  • Learning about wood grain and its importance in woodworking

  • Identifying common woodworking materials such as plywood, pine, and hardwoods

  • Basics of wood preparation and finishing techniques

Project Planning & Execution

  • Reading and following project plans

  • Measuring twice, cutting once

  • Sketching basic project designs

  • Understanding the importance of precision and preparation

Essential Skills

  • Sanding techniques for smooth finishes

  • Joining wood using nails, screws, and wood glue

  • Basic finishing methods, such as staining and painting

  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting when mistakes occur

What to Expect

  • Hands-On Learning: Each class is interactive, with students actively working on their projects.

  • One Project Per Session: Students will complete a single woodworking project over six weeks.

  • Parental Choice: Parents may drop off their child or stay during class.
